Thranduil, the Elvenking · Bracket 3

Gather the court. Curate the memory. Let the forest move once.

Lower-to-middle Bracket 3 legendary Elves using only official Middle-earth printings. Scry and landfall build the court, and the graveyard is a secondary ability toolbox; there are no Game Changers or deterministic combos.

The route

Four beats to the finish.

01

Plant the first court

Keep green mana, an early Elf, and enough fixing to cast the legendary blue and black cards on time.

02

Invite the legends

Cast legendary Elves to trigger Thranduil's draw-two-discard choice and curate useful abilities into the graveyard.

03

Turn sight into growth

Scry and landfall create tokens, counters, and selection while the court remains visible and interactive.

04

Let the forest move

Use an anthem, token burst, typal bounce, or protected board to make one decisive Elf combat.

Opening discipline

Keep the journey.
Ship the souvenir pile.

Keep when…

  • Three lands or two lands plus acceleration, with green and a credible second color.
  • An early Elf and either a legendary follow-up, fixing, or card selection.
  • One answer is useful; a hand of only reactive Sultai cards does not build the court.

Send it back when…

  • A three-color hand whose lands all enter tapped and cannot cast an early Elf.
  • Several five-mana legends without ramp or selection.
  • A graveyard-payoff hand with no commander, loot, or useful activated ability to seed.

Engine map

The court remembers what it has seen

Legendary Elves and scry are now the main engine. The graveyard still lends abilities, but it no longer carries the entire deck.

01

Establish green

Mana Elves and fixing create the three-color floor before the court's legends arrive.

Interaction and recovery

Use Sultai breadth without becoming draw-go

The deck has the pod's widest answer range, but its closing power still requires a creature board and careful three-color development.

Answer the permanent

Beast Within and Reclamation Sage cover opposing engines before they convert into a closing turn.

Reset the right board

Languish, Toxic Deluge, and typal bounce punish different shapes; choose the one that leaves the court recoverable.

Protect the court

Finite protection must be held for a real reset or the commander that keeps the hand moving.

Contest the graveyard

Bojuka Bog is the clean dedicated check; Living Death is powerful only while every graveyard remains public.

Closing windows

Visible endings, real counterplay.

These are developed-game routes, not deterministic lines. Read the shields at the table before committing.

01

Warmaster calls the attack

The Warmaster turns a developed Elf court into a public pump-and-trample turn.

02

The company grows with the land

Thranduil's Company and the Saga build counters and tokens across several visible land drops.

03

Move one blocker aside

Windswift Slice or Raise the Palisade clears the lane without creating a deterministic finish.

Four opponents. Four different questions.

Shared hinge · visible counterplay

Bilbo, Thief in the Night

Watch
Both decks use graveyards as second hands: Bilbo for spells and artifacts, Thranduil for activated Elf abilities.
Answer
Use broad permanent answers after Bilbo's Equipment resolves and make graveyard exile a table decision.
Table read
Disclose both graveyard plans and invite the rest of the table to help police the stronger second hand.

Shared hinge · visible counterplay

The Great Goblin

Watch
Raise the Palisade can avoid Goblin death value; ordinary damage and destruction sweepers still feed the commander.
Answer
Prefer bounce or exile when possible and save broad answers for the Army payoff rather than the first Goblin.
Table read
Say graveyard counts and commander reach aloud; both boards hide resources outside the battlefield.

Shared hinge · visible counterplay

Beorn the Fierce

Watch
Thranduil has broader answers and a stronger long game; Beorn supplies the faster trampling pressure.
Answer
Use typal bounce or a carefully timed reset; Beorn's protection makes a casual damage spell unreliable.
Table read
Beorn lacks dedicated graveyard hate, so another seat must help contest Thranduil's second hand.

Shared hinge · visible counterplay

Thorin, King of Durin's Folk

Watch
Thorin can force action before Thranduil finishes sculpting its court; Thranduil has more answer types in a long game.
Answer
Break Thorin or the key Equipment before Treasure turns one Dwarf chain into a decisive attack.
Table read
Inspect the Elf graveyard before pointing every answer at the public Treasure pile.
