The Great Goblin · Bracket 3

Every counter is a threat. Every death leaves another card.

Lower-to-middle Bracket 3 Goblin and Orc attrition using only official Middle-earth printings. Amass becomes reach and deaths become cards; there are no Game Changers or deterministic combos.

The route

Four beats to the finish.

01

Seed the tunnels

Develop mana and a disposable Goblin or Orc before asking the commander to turn deaths into cards.

02

Raise one Army

Amass repeatedly to place counters, trigger the commander, and make one public threat rather than several hidden engines.

03

Trade on purpose

Use finite sacrifice value and sweepers only when the deaths improve your next turn or prevent a real close.

04

Empty the mountain

Convert the Army, counters, death reach, and recovered creatures into one visible attack or attrition finish.

Opening discipline

Keep the journey.
Ship the souvenir pile.

Keep when…

  • Three lands or two lands plus reliable mana, with both colors available.
  • One cheap Goblin, Orc, or amass effect and a route to the commander.
  • Either card flow or interaction; a hand of only five-mana payoffs is not a plan.

Send it back when…

  • A utility-land hand that cannot cast early black and red spells.
  • Several sweepers without a way to profit from the reset.
  • An Army payoff with no amass card or typal body.

Engine map

Build the Army, then make every loss count

The restricted deck replaces classic Goblin multiplication with Middle-earth amass, counter placement, and finite death value.

01

Start the muster

Cheap amass spells develop a body and trigger the commander's counter damage.

Interaction and recovery

Make a reset improve your position

The deck has excellent creature resets and enough spot removal to hit the hinge, but only a few ways to rebuild twice.

Sweep with a plan

Reset a board that is actually ahead, knowing that typal deaths stock the commander's second hand.

Remove the hinge

Use efficient removal on protection, exile, or the engine that makes an opposing turn lethal.

Break artifacts and graves

The answers are narrow enough that they should be held for a real Equipment, Treasure, or graveyard conversion.

Protect the second wave

Greaves and the Ozolith preserve the commander or counters; neither saves the whole board.

Closing windows

Visible endings, real counterplay.

These are developed-game routes, not deterministic lines. Read the shields at the table before committing.

01

The Army crosses at once

Assault on Osgiliath gives the largest public Army a finite double-strike turn.

02

Every attacker shares the feud

Shared Animosity and Bolg reward a real Goblin-and-Orc board rather than a compact combo.

03

Spend the last bodies

Siege-Gang and Mirkwood Bats turn leftover tokens and Treasure into the final points.

Shared hinge · visible counterplay

Bilbo, Thief in the Night

Watch
Bilbo can counter the largest amass or recovery spell and bounce an invested Army; Goblin pressure can force those answers early.
Answer
Use Stone of Erech on Bilbo's spell cache and make several staggered threats instead of one all-in stack fight.
Table read
Let Bilbo regulate a genuine close; do not delegate every Goblin value spell to the blue seat.

Shared hinge · visible counterplay

Beorn the Fierce

Watch
Goblin death triggers can finish through a stalled Bear board, while Beorn's larger creatures dominate ordinary combat.
Answer
Remove protection before sweeping and avoid placing every counter on an Army that can be bounced or exiled.
Table read
The larger board is not automatically the closer; count commander reach before choosing a target.

Shared hinge · visible counterplay

Thorin, King of Durin's Folk

Watch
Thorin threatens the faster single combat; The Great Goblin benefits more when creatures trade or a wipe resets the table.
Answer
Attack Treasure and Equipment with Cast into the Fire or Treasure Nabber before the protected conversion turn.
Table read
Compare the visible hoard with the Goblin death reach instead of measuring only creature power.

Thranduil, the Elvenking

Watch
Raise the Palisade can avoid Goblin death value; ordinary damage and destruction sweepers still feed the commander.
Answer
Time graveyard exile after the Elf toolbox forms and pressure Thranduil before a wide court stabilizes.
Table read
Say graveyard counts and commander reach aloud; both boards hide resources outside the battlefield.
