Bilbo, Thief in the Night · Bracket 3

Pack light. Burgle the exact answer. Leave by the side door.

Lower-to-middle Bracket 3 Bilbo using only official Middle-earth printings. I burgle tools from my graveyard, interact on the stack, and close through Equipment, tokens, or borrowed spells; there are no Game Changers, deterministic combos, or extra turns.

The route

Four beats to the finish.

01

Pack the graveyard

Keep enough blue mana, one cheap setup piece, and a reason to attack. Bilbo cannot burgle a graveyard that never gets stocked.

02

Make safe passage

Equip or protect Bilbo before exposing him. The attack trigger is the hinge, so a reliable lane matters more than incidental damage.

03

Choose one tool

Replay the artifact or spell that answers this turn's question. Do not spend the graveyard merely because an attack trigger exists.

04

Write the last chapter

Turn the visible Equipment, Army, Spirits, Tentacles, or borrowed spell into a clock the table can still answer.

Opening discipline

Keep the journey.
Ship the souvenir pile.

Keep when…

  • Two to four lands with blue mana and one cheap mana or selection piece.
  • A safe-passage tool or a believable way to stock the graveyard before Bilbo attacks.
  • One contextual answer is useful; five reactive spells without an engine are not.

Send it back when…

  • One-land hands, even when the cantrips look charming.
  • A pile of expensive theft or token payoffs with no graveyard setup.
  • Hands that cast Bilbo but cannot protect, connect, or feed him.

Engine map

A burglary in four chapters

Stock the second hand, cross safely, take exactly one useful thing, then let the table see the finish forming.

01

Leave useful evidence behind

Surveil, loot, mill, and fact-or-fiction choices stock artifacts and one-shot spells rather than random clutter.

Interaction and recovery

Regulate the table without becoming the table.

Bilbo is the pod's cleanest stack and tempo check. Preserve counters for true closers, and remember that four opponents can stretch one-for-one answers.

Stop the irreplaceable spell

Counter the mass recursion, typal avalanche, or protected finisher. Routine creatures are usually somebody else's problem.

Buy one whole combat

Tempo a committed swarm or large attacker instead of trying to answer every setup piece.

Contest the second hand

Stone of Erech pressures the creature graveyards, but deploying it advertises that Bilbo's own graveyard is fair game.

Protect the burglar

Layer Equipment or a one-shot shield before committing the commander to a dangerous attack.

Closing windows

Visible endings, real counterplay.

These are developed-game routes, not deterministic lines. Read the shields at the table before committing.

01

Raise a visible host

Andúril and the Army cards build a board over several turns rather than animating a surprise artifact cache.

02

Let the water answer

The Watcher rewards a long draw game with Tentacles that still die to ordinary interaction.

03

Steal the last chapter

One large theft spell can convert an opponent's graveyard or artifacts into a finite closing turn.

Hobbit Pod field notes

Four opponents. Four different questions.

Use these as first-game threat cues, then update the table read as pilots reveal their hands and priorities.

Shared hinge · visible counterplay

The Great Goblin

Watch
Bilbo can counter the largest amass or recovery spell and bounce an invested Army; Goblin pressure can force those answers early.
Answer
Save the stack answer for Assault on Osgiliath, Living Death, or a lethal Army turn rather than a routine typal body.
Table read
Let Bilbo regulate a genuine close; do not delegate every Goblin value spell to the blue seat.

Shared hinge · visible counterplay

Beorn the Fierce

Watch
Beorn presents the largest honest attackers, while Bilbo can delay one committed combat but cannot answer the whole den forever.
Answer
Keep Devastation Tide, Mists of Lórien, or a tempo spell for the attack that is actually lethal.
Table read
Do not make Bilbo spend the emergency brake on Beorn while a less visible engine is closer to ending the game.

Shared hinge · visible counterplay

Thorin, King of Durin's Folk

Watch
Thorin's expensive multipliers are visible enough for Bilbo to check, but Treasure lets the Dwarf deck stagger threats.
Answer
Counter the multiplier or closing conversion, not the ordinary Dwarf that merely develops the board.
Table read
Count the public hoard together before deciding whether Bilbo must act alone.

Shared hinge · visible counterplay

Thranduil, the Elvenking

Watch
Both decks use graveyards as second hands: Bilbo for spells and artifacts, Thranduil for activated Elf abilities.
Answer
Counter the large Elf payoff or reset, then time Stone of Erech after Thranduil has invested in the graveyard.
Table read
Disclose both graveyard plans and invite the rest of the table to help police the stronger second hand.
