Boros spells · The Feather Protocol · Bracket 3

Cast.
Return.
Reforge.

Feather turns tiny targeted spells into a renewable resource. Sunforger turns the library into the exact answer. The table has to respect both.

“Upper Bracket 3 Feather with three Game Changers, nine reliable Sunforger routes, no infinite combo, and layered combat finishes aimed around turn seven.”

01 / North star

Two engines.
One combat plan.

Feather is the renewable spell engine. Sunforger is the answer engine. The strongest games use one to protect the other, then convert the accumulated mana and bodies into a decisive combat step.

Operating principle

Develop quietly. Expose one protected engine. Make every red-white mana represent the right spell.

What it does well

  • Starts with Feather available.
  • Finds Sunforger through nine reliable routes.
  • Answers permanents, combat, graveyards, and the stack.
  • Scales casts and combat through cards, Treasure, tokens, counters, and copies.
  • Closes through several overlapping combat lines.

What asks discipline

  • Sunforger still asks for cast, attach, and activation mana.
  • Many broad shields are one-shot effects.
  • Both conventional creature wipes are sorceries.
  • The Equipment can be removed in response to its activation.
  • All three Game Changer slots should be disclosed.

02 / Opening decisions

Mulligan for a runway,
not a trophy hand.

The commander is already the engine. Keep hands that cast it responsibly: two to four lands, both colors or credible fixing, and one early bridge—mana, protection, card flow, or Sunforger access.

Seven-card lab

Would you keep?

01

Mana first

Can the first three turns make RWW without pretending a tapped land is untapped?

02

Safe Feather

A one-mana shield is often worth more than a second payoff in an unknown pod.

03

Access third

A tutor upgrades a functional hand. It does not repair one that cannot cast its spells.

03 / Flight plan

The game changes
by phase.

Use the stage selector to separate setup, engine deployment, toolbox posture, closing, and the recovery branch. The deck rewards patience until the first consequential exchange.

04 / Engine room

Understand
the handoff.

Feather and Sunforger meet when a fetched instant targets one of your creatures. The card can be the exact library answer and a spell that returns at the next end step.

Engine A

Recursion by targeting

  1. Cast an instant or sorcery.
  2. Target a creature you control.
  3. Let the spell resolve.
  4. Feather exiles it instead of the graveyard.
  5. Return it at the next end step.
Engine B

Library as a toolbox

  1. Attach Sunforger to a creature.
  2. Pay RW and unattach it.
  3. Search for a red or white instant, MV four or less.
  4. Cast it without paying its mana cost.
  5. Pay any additional costs.

Treasure flywheel

Smothering Tithe and Storm-Kiln Artist produce the fuel. Goldspan doubles every Treasure. Birgi refunds red mana for each spell.

Attach economy

Stoneforge deploys Equipment, Forge Anew recovers and attaches it, Fighter Class discounts equip, and Magnetic Theft can return through Feather.

Mistveil discipline

Recycle the answer the table will need again—not automatically the strongest card. Repeated soft control is a pregame expectation worth naming.

Describe the problem, timing window, and mana you can actually spend. The console checks the cast, attach, and activation runway before recommending a fetch.

Five rules that decide the line

What exactly can Sunforger find?

A red or white instant with mana value four or less. Multicolored cards qualify if either color is present. The card's normal mana cost is waived, but casting restrictions still apply.

Can I equip in response?

Normally, no: equip is restricted to your main phase with an empty stack. Magnetic Theft can attach at instant speed. Forge Anew changes equip timing only during your turn.

Are additional costs free?

No. Sunforger covers only the normal mana cost. Return the Favor still needs the selected spree cost. Restoration Magic's global Curaga tier still needs an additional 3W, has no target, and does not recur through Feather. Ephemerate can return through Feather or rebound after a cast from hand; choose one replacement effect, not both.

When does Feather return the fetched spell?

Only when the spell targets a creature you control. It must resolve; a countered spell goes to the graveyard normally. A shield aimed only at Sunforger does not qualify.

Can an opponent remove Sunforger during activation?

Yes. If removal answers the activation, Sunforger leaves before the fetched spell exists. If you activate in response to removal already on the stack, the fetched shield can resolve first.

06 / Multiplayer conversion

One spell becomes
a table problem.

The deck does not need to deal 21 commander damage three times. It converts each cast into mana, bodies, copies, or global power—then lets Sunforger make combat exact.

Cast

Build bodies and cards

Young Pyromancer makes Elementals when you cast instants or sorceries. Informed Inkwright makes flying Inklings when those casts target a creature; copies alone trigger neither. Feather makes targeted cantrips renewable. Bandage draws for W when aimed at your creature, but prevents only the next 1 damage.

Cast or copy

Multiply the reward

Storm-Kiln Artist makes the original spell and every Zada copy into Treasure.

Target one

Spread the spell

Frontline Heroism and Zada multiply targeted spells across the growing token board.

Connect

Spread and bank damage

Kediss broadcasts Feather's combat damage while Professional Face-Breaker turns connections into Treasure and cards.

01

Kediss commander splash

Pump Feather, fetch double strike, and let Kediss repeat Feather's combat damage to every other opponent.

02

Double power, then convert

Unleash Fury increases a threat's power before double strike or Chandra's Ignition. Fetching Fury unattaches Sunforger first, so its +4 is gone before power doubles.

03

Spell-fueled token line

Young Pyromancer and Informed Inkwright turn the normal cantrip chain into a board, then Zada or Akroma's Will converts those bodies into combat pressure.

04

Copy-engine avalanche

Zada spreads a targeted spell across the board while Frontline Heroism, Young Pyromancer, and Informed Inkwright ensure there are enough bodies to convert it.

05

One-sided Act

Cast Blasphemous Act, hold priority, then fetch Boros Charm through an equipped Sunforger before Act resolves.

07 / Survival manual

Two engines.
Different shields.

Feather is a creature and returns through the command zone. Sunforger is an artifact; creature-only protection misses it, and resolved exile removes the toolbox for the rest of that game.

Protecting Feather

Prefer shields that return

  • Targeted: Restoration Magic, Loran's Escape, Galadriel's Dismissal, Ephemerate.
  • Destroy sweepers: Boros Charm, Akroma's Will, Clever Concealment, Teferi's Protection.
  • Exile or sacrifice: phase out, protect everything, or delay the source on the stack.
Protecting Sunforger

Use artifact-capable answers

  • Targeted: Restoration Magic or Loran's Escape, redirection, phasing, or Lapse of Certainty.
  • Untargeted: Clever Concealment or Teferi's Protection.
  • Destroyed: Forge Anew directly, or Mistveil Plains plus another tutor after recycling it.
Critical timing window

If removal is already on the stack, activate Sunforger and fetch protection above it. If an opponent removes Sunforger in response to the activation, the activation still resolves—but the fetched shield arrives too late to save the Equipment. That line needs protection already in hand.

09 / Deck telemetry

Lean engine.
One nine-mana reset.

Blasphemous Act raises printed average mana value but usually costs far less in a creature pod. Sunforger activations and multi-spell turns still consume more mana than the curve suggests.
