Keep a live opener
Two or three colored lands plus a one- or two-mana accelerant is the clean start. Ship colorless-only hands and hands full of seven-drops.
The campaign
Build pressure. Then make one death count six times.
Build expendability
Treasures, utility creatures, and sacrifice outlets make Mazirek productive the turn it lands. Avoid casting it into an empty ledger.
Multiply the trigger
Roaming Throne, Helm of the Host, or Mirror Box plus Blade of Selves turns every later sacrifice into several team-wide counter triggers.
Cash out hard
Connect with the original, mill the table, fire Walking Ballista, or turn three artifacts into Portal to Phyrexia and a tidal wave of triggers.
Opening hand drill
Seven from the ninety-nine.
Sacrifice arithmetic
The trigger stack is the weapon.
Mazirek triggers once for every permanent any player sacrifices. Copies each trigger separately; Roaming Throne makes each Insect trigger one additional time.
triggersMazireks × sacrifices × Throne multiplier
Counters are placed on each creature you control when those triggers resolve. The myriad copies’ end-of-combat exile is not a sacrifice.
The copy vault
Three ways to make the commander louder.
Helm of the Host
Creates a nonlegendary Mazirek at the beginning of combat. It persists after combat and adds another trigger to every future sacrifice.
Blade + Mirror Box
Myriad makes two token copies at a four-player table. Mirror Box must already be present so the legend rule does not remove them before priority.
Roaming Throne
Name Insect. Each Mazirek then triggers one additional time. Original plus two myriad copies means one sacrifice creates six triggers.
Only the original counts
Copies never inherit the commander designation. Give the original ward and unblockable with Brotherhood Regalia, or route it through Rogue’s Passage.
Battlefield shortcuts
Pay with material.
Receive a catastrophe.
The cheat package is deliberately varied: creatures, graveyards, artifacts, and the top of the library all become deployment lanes.
Rules that win games
Do the accounting before passing priority.
It is neither destruction nor sacrifice. Blade of Selves needs Mirror Box before state-based actions are checked.
Sacrifice Hulk with Mazirek out. Put Mazirek’s trigger below Hulk’s so Broodscale, Scurry Oak, and Viscera Seer enter before counters land.
Put Mazirek below Woodfall Primus’s persist trigger. Primus returns, then opposing +1/+1 and −1/−1 counters cancel.
The three artifacts are sacrificed before the tutor resolves. Mazirek’s three triggers are already waiting when Portal arrives.
