The idea

A forest with a
very short temper.

This is Hydra tribal with mana left open. Develop lands, turn a modest X into a substantial creature, then use targeted protection and combat tricks to keep your board alive and clear a path.

Selected 100-card plan · untested brew. Ancient Tomb, Seedborn Muse, and The One Ring are the three Game Changers in the dated snapshot. Combat is the finish; there is no intentional infinite-combo package.

I / The pilot's notebook

Roots first. Heads later.

Field note

01 / Put down roots

Look for three lands, early acceleration, and either a draw engine or a useful threat. Two Forests plus Nature's Lore and an engine can be a reasonable keep; two utility lands and expensive Hydras are not. Gargos needs three green mana, so Sol Ring and Ancient Tomb do not replace Forests. Keep a protection spell when the rest of the hand already develops.

Field note

02 / Grow one threat at a time

Land search is the foundation. Gargos is a hybrid enabler and enhancer: his discount makes Hydras efficient, while his fights turn targeted spells into pressure. Land him when a protection spell can stay available, then deploy a Hydra beside him. The discount is not a reason to empty your hand into the next wipe. Cast an engine before a creature when doing so earns a draw.

Field note

03 / Open a lane, then attack

Kalonian Hydra turns established counters into lethal pressure. Garruk's Uprising and Rancor supply trample; Rogue's Passage bypasses a blocker. Hydra Omnivore rewards connecting with the most exposed opponent in a five-player game. Its damage to the other opponents is not combat damage, so it does not give extra Ohran Frostfang draws.

Field note

04 / Make every untap matter

Seedborn Muse lets you spend mana on each opponent's turn. Hold up tricks, activate Steelbane Hydra, or draw with lands and The One Ring. Muse does not give Hydras flash. Each Ring activation adds another burden counter, so repeated draws mean a larger life loss next upkeep. The Ring protects you after being cast; it does not protect your creatures.

Field note

05 / Leave something in reserve

A creature wipe usually leaves searched-up lands behind. Use Greater Good or High Market to sacrifice a doomed Hydra when appropriate; then rebuild with a draw engine and a fresh threat. Lifeblood Hydra and Hooded Hydra can turn death into resources. This list has no graveyard recursion: keeping a replacement threat is meaningful protection against running out of gas.

Field note

06 / Know what protection misses

Indestructible stops destruction and lethal damage, not exile, sacrifice, or toughness reaching zero. Heroic Intervention does not target, so it creates no Gargos trigger. Inspiring Call protects only creatures with +1/+1 counters; an untouched Gargos has none. Silkguard needs actual creature targets to trigger Gargos, and only modified creatures gain its protection.

II / The important part

Protection becomes a fight.
Order matters.

A spell targets your creature. Gargos triggers. That trigger is above the spell on the stack, so the fight happens first.

Tamiyo's Safekeeping targets Gargos

The targeting event triggers Gargos. Choose up to one opposing creature as the fight target; choosing none is legal.

  1. RESOLVES FIRSTGargos's triggered fight

Gargos does not have Safekeeping's indestructible yet. Choose a creature he can safely fight, or decline.

  2. RESOLVES SECONDTamiyo's Safekeeping

Gargos gains hexproof and indestructible until end of turn, and you gain 2 life.

More targeting details

One spell targeting multiple distinct creatures you control triggers Gargos once for each of those creatures. Setessan Tactics can do this; the tap-to-fight abilities it grants do not trigger him again. Activated and triggered abilities are not spells.

Ohran Frostfang grants deathtouch only to attacking creatures. Vigor prevents damage to your other creatures, not itself. Neither makes every fight safe automatically.

III / Room to grow

Choose X. Then let it grow.

A worked example for an XGG Hydra that enters with X +1/+1 counters. Discounts change what you pay. Counter effects change what enters.

On your battlefield
Mana to payGG
Enters with4 counters

X remains 4. Gargos removes four generic mana from the cost.

With Scales and the Crystal, apply Scales first: X = 4 becomes (4 + 1) × 2 = 10 counters. These effects do not create counters from zero. No other taxes or replacement effects are included.

The exceptions worth remembering

The model is for the printed X-counter entry, not every Hydra. Voracious Hydra's later triggered doubling, Benevolent Hydra's additional replacement effect, and other abilities need their own calculation. Neither Hardened Scales nor The Earth Crystal doubles tokens.

Gargos reduces only the generic portion of Hydra spells. Nyxborn Hydra cast for bestow is an Aura spell without the Hydra creature type: it gets no Gargos discount, though targeting your creature triggers him. The Crystal and Emerald Medallion still discount green spells. Castle Garenbrig's restricted mana cannot pay for that bestow spell.

IV / Clear the path

Choose the right answer.

Creatures

Gargos fights, Tail Swipe, Ram Through, Inscription of Abundance, and the removal Hydras. Ram Through is one-sided damage, not a fight; trample can send excess damage to that creature's controller.

Artifacts & enchantments

Steelbane Hydra, Collective Resistance, Origin of Metalbending, and Boseiju, Who Endures handle both. Barrier Breach exiles up to three enchantments; when none matter, cycle it for two mana.

Unusual problems

Beast Within reaches any permanent. Scavenger Grounds exiles all graveyards. Whiptongue Hydra destroys all creatures with flying. Ulvenwald Hydra can find the utility land that matters.

V / The complete list

Every head has a job.

Hydra tribal - selected plan · 73 unique names. Roles overlap. Protection is not counted as independent opposing disruption; Gargos's extra fights are conditional.

Printed nonland average mana value: 2.82, with X counted as zero. The actual casting plan spends considerably more.
